Today marked the final show of The Combine's Summer 2010 run, but not to worry, The Combine will be back soon when the fall semester at Emerson College starts and WECB picks back up for the school year! Today's playlist was awesome, I played some great new music from The Acacia Strain, Avenged Sevenfold, Decrepit Birth, Ion Dissonance and others. I also recapped my experiences at the Cool Tour and Mayhem Festival. As I mentioned on the show, a lot of the bands I played today will be part of the Summer Slaughter/ Over The Limit tour tomorrow at the Palladium in Worcester. Should be a blast! Week Six of Summer 2010

Today's show highlighted a bunch of different metal and hardcore, including a solid block of hair/glam metal tunes. I also recapped my first ever Warped Tour experience and highlighted some of the bands from the upcoming Summer Slaughter / Over The Limit tour at the Worcester Palladium. Summer Update - Good News!

Well it's official, THE COMBINE will be on-air all summer long! Just got the official ok from management. Unfortunately due to an upcoming concert this Friday and some work-related obligations the following Friday, THE COMBINE will not be back on-air until the first week of June. But hey, that's only 2 weeks away! The good news is THE COMBINE is here to stay, enjoy the next few weeks, rest your neck because you're gonna need it for some serious headbanging come June when I'm back on-air! Horns high!

Week Ten Semester 2 Update

Yesterday marked the official last installment of The Combine for the Spring 2010 semester here at Emerson College where we broadcast from. Given that I'll be living in Boston all summer, I've spoken with WECB management and *fingers crossed* hopefully they'll be giving me the go-ahead soon to do The Combine all summer long as well. I'll keep you posted.

Today's show was crazy to say the least. I gave away some sweet WECB sunglasses and stickers with a "SLAYER RULES!" instant messenger challenge to winner Andrea of New Jersey, congrats Andrea! I also tried to get someone to muster up the courage to sing some Iron Maiden on air. No one was brave enough for that one though, haha.

Also the gentlemen of Ohio's Karen Page gave us their best Randy Blythe and Phil Anselmo impressions on air when they gave the WECB studio a phone call. Karen Page, American trollcore.

NEMHF 2010 Day 2 - Periphery Interview

Phil was awesome, we got to talk about Whitechapel's upcoming album A New Era of Corruption on Metal Blade which will be out on June 8. The band's live set was totally crushing. NEMHF 2010 Day 2 - Malefice Interview

I got to talk to Tom the bassist of Malefice bright and early Saturday morning before the band hit the main stage. This show was the first Malefice had ever played in the United States, and as Tom says in our interview, the first time the band had been here at all. If you don't know Malefice I encourage you to give them a listen. I love their sound and they put on a great show yesterday despite their nerves on such a big occasion. Tom was one of the nicest guys I've had the pleasure to talk to. After our interview he hung out in the parking lot with my brother and I and talked metal for a while. Great band, check them out, they deserve it. Spread the word, Malefice rules!

*Also* unless the cool dudes over at Metal Injection beat me to the punch, this may very well be Malefice's first interview on American soil. Not 100%, but pretty damn cool nonetheless.

Big Interviews Coming Soon!

As you may or may not know the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival kicks off tomorrow night with a pre-festival party featuring some great metal up-and-comers before the main festivities of Friday and Saturday. I posted the lineup for the NEMHF on here a while back. If you haven't seen it already it features a slew of amazing metal and hardcore acts from fresh faces to metal mainstays. Fortunately I'll be in attendance both Friday and Saturday to get my face moshed and melted in oblivion, and while I'm there I'm also going to get a chance to interview to following badass metal bands. Week Nine Update Semester 2

This week I played some brand new songs from Periphery, Danza and Whitechapel and spun some older tracks from Type O Negative and Carnivore in memory of the late great Peter Steele who passed yesterday of heart failure. A metal great that shall be missed. Also on the show I shared the lineup for this year's Summer Slaughter tour which is going to be earth shaking; Decapitated, The Faceless, Decrepit Birth, Veil of Maya, Carnifex, The Red Chord, All Shall Perish, Vital Remains, Animals As Leaders and Cephalic Carnage. Hot Damn! No show next week unfortunately as I'll be moshing the day (or entire weekend really I guess) away at the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival in Worcester. Thanks for tuning in again! This week I shared the sad news that Despised Icon have called it quits but will continue touring until the end of the year. I also announced the good news The Acacia Strain are done writing their new album and will start recording on April 14th. "This is not the heaviest record ever written," said vocalist Vincent Bennett in a press release, "but it is the heaviest Acacia Strain record to date." Sounds promising to me. Check out my interview with Marc from Veil of Maya below. I caught up with him in Worcester on the final date of the Atticus Metal Tour II. Their set was phenomenal and the whole show was awesome. Marc was really down to earth and a cool guy to talk to. Off camera we talked about our mutual affinity for Jersey Shore and guido fist pumps. Great to hear they'll be on Summer Slaughter too, I look forward to seeing them live again in the future.

Yesterday's Show

My sincerest apologies about yesterday's show, or lack there of I suppose. The Emerson College network, where I broadcast from in Boston, crashed at the top of the two o'clock hour just as I was getting ready to go.

Unfortunately this meant that no one within Emerson College could hear me and I was I would come to learn, neither could anyone else outside campus as well. After a lot of "Hey man I can't hear you what's happening?" text messages and frustration I decided to throw in the towel for the day. The network didn't go back up until some hours later.

So again, my apologies about the lack of a show yesterday, technology let me down unfortunately.

There will not be an episode of the Combine on this coming Friday 3/12/2010 due to the fact that Emerson College is on spring break and as such the WECB studio will be down for a week.

However, be sure to tune in on Friday March 19 for our triumphant return! Metal giants Revocation will be in studio for what's sure to be an amazing interview and I'll be spinning some killer death metal tunes.

Interview with The Acacia Strain

Last night I was one of only a few hundred lucky fans who got to see The Acacia Strain perform live at their DVD premier party. The show was insane, the best Acacia Strain show I've been to and I've seen them about 5 or 6 times now. Their DVD "The Most Known Unknown comes out Tuesday 2/16/10 and I highly recommend picking up a copy. I got mine last night and the live footage from both shows is phenomenal, all in all a great DVD worth checking out even if just a passive fan of this band. After the show I spoke briefly with frontman Vincent Bennett in the waiting area of a popular Chicago themed chain restaurant about the DVD and the band's progress on their next album, check it out!

Week One Update Semester 2

Album Review - New Gama Bomb!

Gama Bomb - Tales From The Grave In Space

Since their inception in 2002, Irish thrashers Gama Bomb have made quite a splash in the European metal scene and are now also garnering a great deal of respect from headbangers here in the states. Their sophomore effort, Tales From The Grave In Space, released as a free download via Earache Records in late 2009 is now available in stores in 2010. Tales sees Gama Bomb’s most crushing work to date. Clocking in at just over thirty minutes, their latest is a bare bones thrash record that foregoes pomp and circumstance and cuts right to the chase.

Stylistically the album doesn’t stray too far from the sound of its predecessor Citizen Brain, but thrash metal has never been known for much innovation. Gama Bomb pass on virtuosic musicianship and innovation and rather opt for a full on thrash assault; chugging speed riffs, blistering solos, thunderous drumming and high-pitched demonic wails ala Tom Araya of Slayer.

Take one look at their lyrics and your appreciation of Gama Bomb’s latest may just increase tenfold, that is if you have a good sense of humor. Where Citizen Brain saw Gama Bomb tackle subjects including zombies, global warming, crime, and thrashaholism, Tales From The Grave In Space deals with mummies, Mussolini, ninjas, ghosts, witches and more. Its clear that while the band are serious about their tunes, they’re not afraid to have fun with their subject matter.

Today’s neo-thrash revival bands, Gama Bomb included, often fall under fire for being one-trick ponies, and while it would be quite a stretch to call anything flagship neo-thrashers like Municipal Waste or say Toxic Holocaust are doing radically progressive, their apparent lack of innovation does not discredit their contributions to the modern metal scene at large.

As is apparent by the popularity and success these bands have gained, many metal fans are still down for a good time album, and Tales is just that. It revels in its own simplicity at a time when so many contemporary metal acts strive for, and some would argue go overboard with, technicality and complexity.

If a fun party-thrash record is what you’re after than Tales From The Grave In Space is just what you need, but if you’re looking for metal with a little more substance than this album may leave something to be desired. Simple? Yes. Groundbreaking? Not so much. What Gama Bomb lack in variance they more than make up for with twelve tracks of hard-hitting mosh-worthy thrash, and in the end if you’re not having fun, what’s the point?

Yesterday I finally got the chance to catch Sea Of Treachery live for the first time at their show in Arlington, Massachusetts as part of the Be Shred or Be Dead tour presented by Malus clothing. The show was amazing and Sea Of Treachery were super friendly guys. I even got a chance to do a short interview with vocalist Alex Huffman who was super cool to talk to and an all around great guy. Check out the interview below, it also features a few live clips of the band's performance. Hey there heshers and headbangers, I hope you enjoyed week three of THE COMBINE on WECB. Today's installment of the show was particularly fun to participate in because today was the Saturday Thrashtacular edition of the show. Welcome to the official accompanying blog of WECB's THE COMBINE. Airing every Saturday afternoon from 2-4 PM the show will feature an eclectic mix of metal music as well as news regarding the metal community, local shows and tours, and hopefully some band interviews. To tune in you can stream online live at wecb.emerson.edu, or if you happen to be an Emerson student on campus just listen on channel 65 on your dorm room t.v.

This blog will feature a playlist of each week's songs as well as album reviews, artist interviews, random clips from youtube that I feel are worth your time, etc. Basically THE COMBINE blog will exist as an extension of the show that'll let you follow up on bands you might've never heard before and that sort of thing. The show also as a presence on Facebook with a group entitled "THE COMBINE on WECB," so if you're a Facebook nerd you can follow the show their as well and posts requests and such.
